10 years ePrep Brochure

Presentation of the use of PALETTE services by the ePrep Community of practice (90 s video realised by Nathalie Van de Wiele for the PALETTE Website - here in French)

The PALETTE Project

From February 1, 2006, to January 31, 2009, ePrep is one of the 14 partners of the PALETTE (Pedagogically sustained Adaptive Learning Through the exploitation of Tacit and Explicit knowledge) research and development project supported by the European Commission.

The ePrep Community of Practice (ePrep CoP), launched in October 2006 thanks to PALETTE, is one of the 12 CoPs chosen by PALETTE to develop its services and scenarios according to the Participative Design Methodology (PDM). A two page document produced by ePrep for the Final PALETTE Project Report, entitled "PDM in action on the occasion of LimSee3 trials for the ePrep CoP" (pdf 76 kB), illustrates what is PDM.

This page presents the PALETTE project and the involvement of ePrep in this project.

PALETTE Objectives

PALETTE is an Integrated Project (IP) of the FP6 IST Programme. The European Commission Funding is 6 000 000 € and the project period is February 2006 - January 2009.

The PALETTE Consortium gathers 14 partners from Algeria, Belgium, France, Greece, Luxembourg, United Kingdom and Switzerland, presented below.

The PALETTE brochure is available here (zip pdf 436 kB).

The PALETTE project aims at facilitating and augmenting individual and organisational learning in Communities of Practice (CoPs). Towards this aim, an interoperable and extensible set of innovative services as well as a set of specific scenarios of use will be designed, implemented and thoroughly validated in CoPs of diverse contexts.

To conduct its researches and to develop its services, the PALETTE projects interact with a dozen of Communities of Practice, in the educational domain, the engineering domain and the management domain.

Research results involving ePrep

Participative design session with the ePrep CoP, June 2007
Participative design session with the ePrep CoP, June 2007

ePrep takes fully part in the research and development tasks of the PALETTE project, involving the members of its Community of Practice when necessary (a specific PALETTE forum was open for the ePrep CoP to initiate first exchanges).

The results of this work involving ePrep can be consulted in the PALETTE deliverables sent to the European Commission, and particularly in the deliverables listed below:

  • Grid of Analysis Supporting the Participative Design Methodology - D. PAR.01 (pdf 2,7 MB)
  • Description of 6 scenarios and of the results of 6 validated trials - D.PAR.03 (pdf 4,7 MB) (especially les pages 64 à 92)
  • Learning and Organisational Resources: Conceptual Instruments for Self-Analysis, Learning and Development of CoPs - D.PAR.06 (pdf 1 MB)
  • Analysis of Instrumental Genesis lived by the CoPs - D.PAR.08 (pdf 2,9 MB)
  • Second version of document authoring services (Amaya, LimSee3) - D.INF.05 (pdf 1,9 MB)
  • Final version of the information services (Amaya, LimSee3) - D.INF.07 (pdf 2 MB)
  • Knowledge Management Services for CoPs - D.KNO.08 (pdf 4,2 MM) (section 8.2.7 - Wikiprépas Ontology)
  • PALETTE Final Exploitation Plan - D.DIS.12 (pdf 608 kB)

To conduct these tasks, several participative design sessions involving PALETTE researchers were organised by ePrep for its Community of Practice. Added to the presentations made by the PALETTE researchers at the 2006, 2007 and 2008 ePrep Thematic Seminars, these meetings allowed ePrep CoP members to better know and use PALETTE tools. To access the meeting minutes, click below (HTML pages):

These developments are of mutual interest for PALETTE and the ePrep CoP: on the one hand, they have initiated "good practices" and they have induced pedagogical innovation in the framework of the projects conducted by the CoP; on the other hand, they have allowed PALETTE researchers to adapt their tools and services to the needs of a community of the educational domain.

In the framework of the PALETTE project, ePrep has also developed a draft ontology for its CoP thanks to a first study of the Wikiprépas project with SweetWiki, PALETTE tool, and has contributed to several research papers. These documents are available below:

  • "An example of participatory design methodology in a project which aims at developing individual and organisational learning in Communities of Practice" (Daele, Erpicum, Esnault, Pironet, Platteaux, Vandeput, Van de Wiele, 2006) (pdf 260 kB) presented at EC-TEL 2006 (Grece - October 2006)
  • "Drafting the ePrep CoP ontology - Methodology and lessons learned" (Van de Wiele, 2007) (pdf 1,4 MB)
  • "Design in use - the case of two CoPs: ePrep and Did@cTIC" (Van de Wiele, Rossier, Charlier, 2008) (pdf 268 kB) presented at the 6th International Conference Networked Learning (Grece - May 2008)
  • "Emergence of a Community of Practice: a Case Study" (Daele, Van de Wiele, Charlier Kueng, 2009) (pdf 260 ko) presented at TEL-CoPs'09, in conjunction with EC-TEL 2009 (Nice, France - September 2009)

On the occasion of the Review Meetings organised at the European Commission, ePrep made the following presentations:

  • April 2007 : "The ePrep CoP: birth and development of a CoP inspired and supported by PALETTE" (pdf 296 kB)
  • April 2008 : "The ePrep CoP: an exciting year of participatory design supporting successful CoP developments" (pdf 588 kB) and " Design-in-use: the LimSee3 trial with the ePrep CoP" (pdf 884 kB)
